Huawei knocks Samsung off throne and is world's largest smartphone seller
We have a new number one; in fact, Huawei is the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, pushing Samsung aside. It is remarkable and admirable to say that Huawei has succeeded just now, because of U.S. restrictions on the company. In fact, Huawei smartphones are no longer equipped with Google services, which is mainly a problem for sales in the western part of the world. Unlike Huawei, Samsung does not have a large stake in China and is therefore more vulnerable to conditions (think economic contraction and the accompanying Covid pandemic) in Western Europe and other emerging markets. So it is extra handsome that Huawei has now succeeded, although the numbers must be looked at with realism and sobriety. The headline position that Huawei now has to grab is unlikely to be long-lasting.
This is because the numbers are currently very much affected by the Covid pandemic. Looking at the statistics, it can be seen that Huawei shipped 5% less in 2020 than it did the year before. Samsung, however, is experiencing a 30% drop from the previous year. China is already in another Economic growth, while the Western market and other emerging markets are still experiencing a contraction. Since Huawei has always sold its services in China without Google, not much has changed for them. Samsung, however, has a huge market share in the Western world and is much smaller in China, where they are just a small player. So from this you can see that the pandemic has hit Samsung much harder than Huawei.
In conclusion, we can say that this pandemic caused Huawei to do so well now, which of course does not make the achievement any less impressive. However, it is to be expected that this will eventually change when the economy in the West improves. In any case, we are very curious about the developments on the market.
