By 2022, iPhones accounted for eight spots in the top 10 best-selling smartphones

Research by market analyst CounterPoint Research shows that iPhones were the most popular smartphones last year (2022). For instance, the iPhone 13 was the best-selling smartphone globally last year and Apple accounted for as much as 28% of all smartphones sold worldwide.

Pro Max versions increasingly popular
In the top 10, the iPhone 13 is immediately followed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max and then the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The top 10 further includes the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, SE, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro. All these devices together thus accounted for as much as 28% of all smartphones sold worldwide. The two non-Apple smartphones in the top 10 are the Samsung Galaxy A13 and Samsung Galaxy A03. These are two budget devices from Samsung and cost a lot less than the iPhones. Also very striking: the presence of the iPhone 14 Pro Max in the top 10. In fact, this device only appeared around the last quarter of 2022, but was thus the best-selling device in September, October and November last year.

iPhone especially popular among Gen Z
According to The Wall Street Journal, more and more teenagers and twenty-somethings (generation Z) prefer iPhone. So this explains the growth in popularity. Incidentally, this trend can be found from the US, Europe to Asia. The younger users prefer the design, cameras and unique features such as AirDrop as reasons why they choose Apple's smartphones. Even in Samsung's home country of South Korea, Apple's popularity continues to grow. Indeed, about 52% of South Koreans aged between 18 and 29 owned an iPhone last year. However, Samsung is still the world's largest smartphone vendor globally in total numbers. The upper class of our society does seem to be leaning more and more towards Apple's smartphones.

Apple announces yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
Another fun bit of news about Apple is that they have added a new colour option to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Thus, these are now available in yellow in addition to the existing colours: black, blue, red, purple and silver. This is not the first time Apple has released a new colour option while the device has been on the market for a while. Traditionally, Apple released exclusive colour options for the more expensive Pro models. So it is interesting to see that so now this is happening for the standard 14 and Plus. Perhaps another colour will also come out for the Pro models, as last year's deep purple iPhone proved hugely successful and was the most popular colour option.
